How to Keep Your Pets Safe for the 4th of July

6 Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe This Fireworks Season

The 4th of July is just around the corner, and you know what that means - fireworks, barbecues, and the kick off to a summer of fun! But while we might love loud celebrations & watching the fireworks, our furry friends might feel quite differently. So, to ensure that your pets have a stress-free and safe 4th of July, I've compiled a paw-some list of tips and tricks. Let's dive right in!

Plan to Exercise your dog Earlier in the Day

Luckily for us, most fireworks don’t start until after the sun goes down. So, before the fireworks start lighting up the sky, take your pup for an early morning walk, hike, or a game of fetch. Let them burn off that excess energy, and by the time the fireworks begin, they won’t be antsy from being cooped up all day. Plus, it's the perfect excuse for some extra playtime with your furry bestie!

Prep Toppls, Kongs, & Other Long-Lasting Chews to Keep Your Dog Entertained During the Noise

Be prepared with some long-lasting treats to keep them entertained during the fireworks extravaganza. Fill up their favorite puzzle toys, Toppls, licki mats, or Kongs with tasty treats. Chewing and licking releases endorphins in dog brains making them feel happier and more relaxed - exactly the vibe we’re looking for this weekend. To make them last even longer, try freezing them for a cool treat that can last 3 times as long.

Did you know that more dogs are reported missing on July 5th than any other day?

Double check your fences, gates, doors, & windows to make sure they're secure BEFORE the big day. Terrified dogs can surprise us with their Houdini-like skills. Take a walk around your home and make sure that all fences, gates, doors, and windows are locked and escape proofed. The last thing you want is your dog taking off on a grand adventure during the fireworks.

When’s the last time you checked microchip registrations & made sure tags are still securely attached to collars?

Make sure your pet's ID tags and collars are up to date with your current contact information. Even if they are usually au natural while at home - this weekend you might consider keeping their collars & tags on, even when the plan is to stay inside. Having the right information on their tags could be a lifesaver. And while we're at it, log in to their microchip registry and double-check that microchip registration too. Microchips get dogs (and cats!) back home.

how to Help Your Dog Cope with Firework Noise

We all have our coping mechanisms, and our dogs are no different. To minimize the noise from fireworks, turn up the volume on your TV or play some soothing tunes - Through A Dog’s Ear is a great option available on Amazon Music. And if you have them available, don’t forget the power of fans and white noise machines. They can work wonders in creating a more peaceful environment for your dog.

Plan to stay in and celebrate with your pup so they feel safe

When it comes down to it, our pets look to us for comfort and security. So, why not skip the big outdoor parties and cozy up on the couch with your furry companions? Pop some popcorn, watch a favorite movie, and make them feel safe and loved as you enjoy the festivities from the comfort of your own home. Snuggle up, give them belly rubs, and let them know that everything is going to be A-OK.

Now, these are some tips and tricks that I swear by, but I'm curious to know what else you do to prepare for the 4th of July. Share your secrets in the comments below, and let's help each other make this celebration a tail-wagging success!
